District of Columbia Cruises to Victory Over Queens College, 6-3

QUEENS, NY - The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team traveled to play Queens College, where they defeated the Knights by a score of 6-3.  With the win, the Firebirds improved to 7-2 on the season and 3-0 in East Coast Conference play.

The Knights opened the day with a win at the No. 1 doubles match.  Senior Aleksandar Grabovac (Psychology – Ljubljana, Slovenia/Gimnazija Euro Sola Ljubljana) and sophomore Simon Andersson (Business Management – Ystad, Sweden/Sydskanska Gymnasiet) were defeated by Younes Hidass and Christopher Baron, 8-4.  The Firebirds responded with an 8-6 win by junior Carlos Quiroga (Electrical Engineering – Valencia, Venezuela/Maria Montessori) and freshman Simon Bratke (Undecided – Bonn, Germany/Collegium Josephinum Bonn) over doubles team of Alexander Morris and Adam Pizow.  In what proved to be a close match, junior Miguel Uzcategui (Electrical Engineering – Valencia, Venezuela/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) and junior Ike Kiro (Undecided – Milnerton Ridge, South Africa/Milnerton HS) ended doubles play by recording a 9-8(4) victory over Nikolaj Wulff and Andre Pellegrino.

Uzcategui led off in singles play for the Firebirds by easily defeating Baron 6-2, 6-0.  Kiro followed suit by recording a 6-2, 6-1 win over Wulff of Queens College.  With the overall match point on the line, Quiroga delivered for the Firebirds by securing a win over Morris by a score of 6-2, 6-2. 

The last Firebird win of the day came at the hands of Grabovac as he beat Hidass 7-5, 6-1.  Bratke was defeated by Pizow 6-4, 6-2.  In the last match of the day, Andersson fought a close match, but ultimately succumbed to Pellegrino 6-3, 7-5, 10-6.

District of Columbia will be back in action at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 7 as they travel to take on NYIT.
