District of Columbia Men's Tennis Cruises to 7-2 Victory at Chowan

MURFREESBORO, NC - In its final tune-up match of the fall season, the University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team cruised to a 7-2 victory over non-conference foe, Chowan University on Saturday afternoon.

The Firebirds (3-0) earned victories at No. 1 and 2 doubles and then claimed five of the six singles matches. The only two points surrendered to Chowan were due to insufficient lineup at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.

In doubles play, the Firebirds' No. 2 pair and the ITA East Region Doubles B draw champions, juniors Carlos Quiroga (Electrical Engineering - Valencia, Venezuela/Maria Montessori) and Miguel Uzcategui (Electrical Engineering - Valencia, Venezuela/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) improved to 7-0 this season as they defeated Danilo Galovic and Scott Van Eck, 8-1. Senior Aleksandar Grabovac (Psychology - Ljubljana, Slovenia/Gimnazija Euro Sola Ljubljana) and sophomore Simon Andersson improved to 2-1 at No. 1 doubles with a solid, 8-2 decision as well. The Firebirds, who forfeited the No. 3 doubles match due to an insufficient line-up, headed into singles play with a 2-1 advantage.

After a forfeit at No. 6 singles evened the match at 2-2, the Firebirds went on to sweep the top-five singles matches. Junior Ike Kiro (Business Management - Milnerto Ridge, South Africa/Milnerton HS) picked up the first of those five wins with a commanding, 6-0, 6-3 win over Sasha Kirsanov at No. 3 singles. Next was Andersson handing Chowan's Galovic a 6-2, 6-0 defeat at No. 4 singles for his third victory of the season. Uzcategui also earned his third win as he beat Ivan Doubograev, 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot.

At No. 1 singles, Grabovac had to battle, but the team's lone senior came out on top to defeat Pedro Aiala, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 for his fifth singles win of the season. Quiroga finished off the day with his team-leading sixth singles win of the year, 6-0, 6-1 over Van Eck at the No. 5 spot.

The Firebirds' fall schedule is now complete. Their first scheduled match for the spring is on March 16th at home against non-conference foe Merrimack.
