Firebirds Men's Tennis Blanks St. Mary's College (MD), 7-0

WASHINGTON, DC - The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team received its second win of the season in convincing fashion against St. Mary's College of Maryland by a score of 7-0.  With the win, the Firebirds improved their record to 2-0 on the season.

The Firebirds swept all seven matches of the day against the Seahawks, with the No. 1 and 3 doubles matches being scheduled, but not played.

In singles matches, junior Miguel Uzcategui (Electrical Engineering – Valencia, Venezuela/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) earned the match's first point with a win over Hardesty 6-2, 6-1.  In the No. 4 match, sophomore Simon Andersson (Business Management – Ystad, Sweden/Sydskanska Gymnasiet) came away with a victory over Feighner, 6-2, 6-0.  Senior Aleksandar Grabovac (Psychology – Ljubljana, Slovenia/Gimnazija Euro Sola Ljubljana) recorded his second singles win of the season with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Gear.  Junior Ike Kiro (Milnerton Ridge, South Africa/Milnerton HS) followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Feeley.  Freshman newcomer Fabian Patrutescu (Timisoara, Romania/L.P.S. Banatul Timisoara) clinched the match victory with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Guzzone.  With the match already decided, junior Carlos Quiroga (Electrical Engineering – Valencia, Venezuela/Maria Montessori) eased past Paulishak by a score of 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.

With the No. 1 and 3 doubles matches scheduled but not played, Kiro and Patrutescu earned the only possible win with a score of 8-3 over doubles partners Feeley and Feighner.  This doubles match finished out the day for the Firebirds.

District of Columbia will be back in action on Saturday, September 22nd in Philadelphia at the ITA East Regional Championship.
