University of the District of Columbia Men's Tennis Succumbs to Queens in ECC Finals
FLUSHING, NY - The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team fell short in the East Coast Conference Finals for the second straight year, as the No. 2 seeded Firebirds were defeated by top-seeded Queens College, 5-1 on Thursday, April 19th.
The Firebirds, ranked No. 3 in the East Region, finish the season with a record of 16-4 and await their seeding in the NCAA East Regional Tournament. The Knights, ranked No. 24 in the nation and No. 2 in the region, improved to 18-3 overall.
Queens earned the first point of the day when Tyrone Ewels and Claudio Andrade defeated Tomas Gajdusek and Bruno Reich, 8-1 at second doubles. However, Miguel Uzcategui and Carlos Quiroga answered back for UDC with a clutch, 9-7 win at third doubles to even the match, 1-1. Simon Andersson and Aleksandar Grabovac put forth a tremendous effort to try and give the Firebirds a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play, but came up just short versus Attila Toth and Nikolaj Wulff, 9-8 (7-4).
The Knights went on to claim victories at No. 4, 2 and 5 singles to clinch the match, and the other three singles matches were halted.
