University of the District of Columbia Men's Tennis Earns First ECC Win
WASHINGTON, DC -The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team earned a 7-2 win against East Coast Conference foe NYIT on Saturday afternoon at the UDC Tennis Courts. The No. 3 regionally ranked Firebirds rebounded from a loss to Queens College yesterday by earning their first conference win of the season.
The Bears started off by winning two out of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Firebirds picked up the victory by winning all six singles matches for a 7-2 victory. The NYIT Bears fell to 2-1 in the East Coast Conference (ECC) and 8-9 overall.
Sophomores Miguel Uzcategui (Valencia, Venezuela/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) and Carlos Quiroga (Valencia, Venezuela/Maria Montessori) won the only doubles match for the Firebirds, defeating Filip Van Eylen and Eduardo Maurtua 6-1, 6-4. Miguel Uzcatequi would then tie the match up, 2-2 by winning his singles match 6-1, 6-2. The Firebirds would not look back and continued to take over the match when Bruno Reich defeated Vojislav Pecikoza at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-3. The Firebirds would go on to win the rest of their singles matches after a slow start to earn a victory and improve their record to 12-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
The Firebirds will return to action on Tues. April 10th at 3:00 p.m., for Senior Day as they host Virginia St. of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).
