Firebirds Men's Tennis Cruises Past Regionally-Ranked Chestnut Hill, 8-1

PHILADELPHIA - The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team earned a decisive, 8-1 road victory at Chestnut Hill College on Friday afternoon in a battle of two regionally-ranked opponents.

The No. 3 ranked Firebirds won all three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches to claim the lopsided victory and improve to 10-2 on the season. The No. 7 ranked Griffins fell to 8-7 on the season.

Miguel Uzcategui and Carlos Quiroga got the Firebirds off to a fast start with a commanding, 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles. District of Columbia's No. 1 and 2 teams followed with 8-3 victories to complete the doubles sweep.

Bruno Reich and Uzcategui, respectively, earned the first two singles points of the match and thereby clinched the Firebirds victory.

Grabovac, the No. 13 ranked singles player in the East Region, came back after losing the first set, 6-3, to defeat No. 20 ranked Mike Humes, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles to increase UDC's lead to 6-0. No. 14 Tomas Gajdusek would bow out in a very competitive marathon second singles match to Yoann Pham, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) for the only point of the day surrendered by the Firebirds.

Quiroga and Andersson would wrap up the match with victories at No. 6 and 5, respectively, and the visitors captured an impressive 8-1 victory.

District of Columbia stays in Philadelphia to take on another team from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, USciences, on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
