University of the District of Columbia Men's Tennis Bounces Back for 9-0 Win

WASHINGTON, DC - The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team rebounded from its first loss of the season against Division I Georgetown University with a shutout win against West Chester University, 9-0 on Saturday afternoon at the UDC Tennis Courts.

The District of Columbia (9-1) swept all six singles matches and all three doubles matches, earning its fifth shutout victory of the season. West Chester fell to 4-6 on the season with the loss.

Aleksandar Grabovac (Ljubljana, Slovenia - Gimnazija Euro Sola Ljubljana) and Simon Andersson (Ystad, Sweden - Sydskanska Gymnasiet) got the day started in doubles play by picking up the match's first point with an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles. They improved their record to 9-1 on the season.

At No. 2 doubles, Tomas Gajdusek (Prague, Czech Republic - Gymnazium Nad Stolou) and Bruno Reich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Colegio Tempo de Aprender) won 8-0 to reach 7-1 on the year. Shortly after, Miguel Uzcategui (Valencia, Venezuela - Colegio Sagrado Corazon) and Carlos Quiroga (Valencia, Venezuela -Maria Montessori) picked up an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles and improved to 7-2 on the season.

In singles play, Grabovac set the tone at the top spot by winning 6-0, 6-2. He was followed by Gajdusek, who defeated Chaz Irwin 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 singles spot. For the third singles win, Bruno Reich soared to a 6-1, 6-0 victory and was followed by great performances by Uzcategui, Andersson, and Quiroga.

The Firebirds are currently ranked No. 48 in the ITA national poll and No. 3 in the East region. (New rankings will be published on ITA on Wednesday, March 21st)They will visit the No. 4 team in the nation and top team in the East Region, Concordia College (NY) on Friday, March 23 at 1 p.m.
