University of the District of Columbia Men's Tennis Stays Unbeaten; Earns 6-1 Victory Over Howard

WASHINGTON, DC - The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team improved to 6-0 with a 6-1 victory over Division I Howard University on Thursday afternoon at Banneker Community Center.

The Firebirds won all three doubles matches (winning the 3rd by default) and five of the six singles matches (No. 6 by default).

In doubles play, Tomas Gajdusek (Prague, Czech Republic - Gymnazium Nad Stolou) and Bruno Reich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - Colegio Tempo de Aprender) earned a convincing, 8-2 win in the second flight match while Aleksander Grabovac (Ljubljana, Slovenia - Gimnazija Euro Sola Ljubljana) and Simon Andersson (Ystad, Sweden - Sydskanska Gymnasiet) completed the sweep with an 8-3 win in the first flight.

Already up in the match 2-0, Reich's 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles and Gajdusek's, 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles upped the Firebirds' lead to 4-0. Grabovac seemed well on his way to earning UDC's third straight singles win at the No. 1 singles slot, but Devard Wharton came roaring back to win, 0-6, 6-4, 10-4 for Howard's only point of the afternoon.

Miguel Uzcatequi (Valencia, Venezuela - Colegio Sagrado Corazon) and Simon Andersson each won their singles matches at the No. 4 and 5 slots, respectively, as the Firebirds went on to win by a count of, 6-1.

The Firebirds have over a week off before they travel to Waterbury, CT for a match at Post University on March 9th at 3:00 p.m.
