Firebird Men's Tennis loses in ECC Championships; 13-5 record is 11 Win Turnaround
April 21,2011: Old Westbury,NY- The East Coast Conference Championship went to #2 regionally ranked Queens College as they defeated the University of the District of Columbia Men's Tennis squad, 5-1, on the courts of NYIT in Old Westbury,NY. This officially ends the UDC season with a No.4 regional ranking, a record of 13 - 5 overall and 4 - 2 mark in the ECC for 2010-11. The Firebirds were ranked #4 in the East Region of Division II Tennis going into the match.
UDC's #1, Jr. Tomas Gajdusek (Finance Major-Prague,Czech Republic) lost in his rematch with Queens' tough #1, Atilla Toth, 6-1, 6-0. UDC doubles combo Miguel Uzcatequi (Fr.-Electrical Engineering Major-Valencia,Venezuela) and Carlos Quiroga ( Fr.-Electrical Engineering Major-Valencia,Venezuela) beat Fabio Minami and Andre Pellegrino of Queens College, 8-6.
Coach Dickie Mahaffey and his squad showed an 11 win improvement from 2009-10 and have four key performers back for next year. Gajdusek, Utzcatequi and Quiroga will be joined by Jr. Bruno Reich (Business Mgmt. Major-Rio de Janeiro,Brazil) as the Firebirds will resume the hunt for an ECC title and an NCAA bid. Seniors Karlon Bernard (Psychology Major-Scarborough,Trinidad and Tobago) and Lalindra Jayatilleke (Electrical Engineering Major-Suva,Fiji) made tremendous contributions to the program and will be missed upon graduation.
