UDC Tops Shepherd 6-3

Washington, DC: April 6, 2011- The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Men's Tennis Team defeated the Shepherd University Rams, 6-3, in an exciting match this afternoon at the UDC Tennis Courts in Washington, DC. The Firebirds improved to 9-3 overall for the season with this win.

The Firebirds opened the match with a 2-1 doubles win, spearheaded by juniors Tomas Gajdusek (Finance-Prague, Czech Republic) and Bruno Reich (Business Management- Rio de Janeiro) with an 8-1 win over Chris Pratt and Taylor Boyle. Freshmen Miguel Uzcategui (Electrical Engineering- Valencia, Venezuela) and Carlos Quiroga (Electrical Engineering- Valencia, Venezuela) followed with an 8-1 doubles win over Michael Lesko and Al Starlings.

 In the only doubles loss of the match, David Leonard  and Kent Thomas defeated seniors Karlon Bernard (Psychology-Scarborough, Trinidad) and Lalindra Jayatilleke (Electrical Engineering- Suva, Fiji Islands) 8-5.

Playing on court #1 in the singles competition, Gajdusek defeated Chris Pratt 1-6, 7-6(7) tie break, and 10-8, while over on court #2 Reich was busy defeating Lesko  6-2,6-2.

In other singles competition, Uzcategui  defeated Boyle 6-2, 6-1 on court #3, and Quiroga took down Boyle with set scores of 6-1, 7-6(3) tie break,  on court #4.

In the two UDC singles losses, Bernard went down to Leonard 6-1, 6-2 on court #5, while Jayatilleke fell to Starlings 6-3, 6-1 on court #2.

UDC Head Men's Tennis Coach T. Richard Mahaffey was very pleased with the win, saying ""Another good win today for the team.  A great win for Tomas.  His opponent had him on the ropes and Tomas was able to persevere."

The Firebirds return to the courts on Friday, April 8, hosting the Dowling College Golden Lions on the UDC Tennis Courts.
