Men’s Tennis Opens with Solid Win

Washington, DC: February 26, 2011- The University of the District of Columbia Men's Tennis Team opened their spring campaign with a solid, 6-3, win over the West Chester University Golden Rams on Saturday at the Southeast Tennis & Learning Center in Washington, DC. Junior Tomas Gajdusek (Finance- Prague, Czech Republic) led the Firebirds to the win.

Gajdusek was a perfect 2-0 in both singles and doubles action. He defeated West Chester's Nate Geigle 6-2, 6-3 in singles competition and combined with Bruno Reich to defeat Geigle and Connor Dunn 8-1 in doubles play.

Junior Bruno Reich (Business Management- Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) was undefeated in match competition; first beating West Chester's Matt Thomas 6-1, 6-0 in singles play, then with Gajdusek defeated Nate Geigle and Connor Dunn 8-1 in doubles action. As a result of his performance against West Chester, Reich was named the East Coast Conference (ECC) Rookie of the Week.

Head Men's & Women's Coach T. Richard Mahaffey was pleased with his team's performance during the match, particularly Gajdusek and Reich's efforts. "Tomas and Bruno complement each other well—they have good chemistry on the court as a doubles team," said Mahaffey. "I am also pleased that Bruno was recognized for his performance this week and confident that this is just the first of many".

UDC returns to the courts on Saturday, March 5, at 5 p.m., against the West Chester University Eagles. The match will be played at the Southeast Tennis & Learning Center, 701 Mississippi Avenue, S.E.
