UDC Men's Tennis Defeats Shepherd, 7-2

Shepherdstown, WV: April 15, 2010-- The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Men's Tennis Team closed out its regular season in fine fashion this afternoon, defeating the Shepherd University Rams, 7-2, in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. The Firebirds swept the doubles matches, 3-0, before going on to win 4 of the singles matches.

The # 1 doubles team of sophomores Tomas Gajdusek (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Nad Stolou) and Mahmut Demirkol (Istanbul, Turkey/Ozdemir Sabanci Emirgan Lisesi) defeated Taylor Boyle and Liam MacDonald  8-2.  Senior Daniel Gourdine (Silver Spring, Maryland/James H. Blake High School) and junior Lalindra Jayatilleke (Suva, Fiji Islands/Suva Grammar School), the #2 doubles team,  defeated Kent Thomas and David Leonard 8-5. The #3 doubles team of senior Adrian Wyllie (Kingstown, St. Vincent/St. Joseph Convent) and junior Karlon Bernard defeated Jordan Hunter and Greg Khan8-6.

In singles match play Gajdusek (UDC) defeated Boyle 6-1, 6-0 while Demirkol (UDC) defeated Thomas 6-0, 6-0. MacDonald (SU) took the #3 singles match from Wyllie 2-6, 6-0, 10-4.

Gourdine (UDC) defeated Leonard 4-6, 6-3, 10-8, in the # 4 singles match, while Hunter (SU) defeated Bernard 3-6, 6-0, 10-8. In the # 6 singles match Jayatilleke (UDC) defeated Khan 6-0,  6-1.

UDC Head Coach T. Mahaffey, III, pleased with the team's performance, described them as having" stepped up their play in this match as they prepare to enter the East Coast Conference (ECC) Tennis Tournament April 21".  The ECC Championship will be played at Queens College in New York City. UDC, which became an associate member of the ECC in the fall of 2009,  is seeded 4th in the Championship.
