Chestnut Hill Edges UDC, 5-4, in Tennis

Philadelphia, PA: March 20, 2010—In a very close match the Chestnut Hill College Griffins Men’s Tennis Team eked out a, 5-4, win over the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds this afternoon at the Chestnut Hill Tennis courts.

UDC opened the match by winning two of the three doubles competitions as sophomores Tomas Gajdusek (Prague, Czech Republic) and Mahmut Demirkol (Istanbul, Turkey) won their match, 8-5, while senior Adrian Wyllie (Kingston, St. Vincent) and junior Lalindra  Jayatilleke (Suva, Fiji Islands) defeated their opponents, 8-3, to give the Firebirds the, 2-1, lead. Following those wins, the doubles combo of senior Daniel Gourdine (Silver Spring, MD) and junior Karlon Bernard (Scarborough Trinidad) lost their match, 8-2.

In singles competition Gajdusek, playing in the # 1 spot, defeated Joe Boyle, 6-1, 6-0. Demirkol followed with a, 6-3, 6-4, win over Pat Joson. Wyllie then fell to Julius Twyman, 2-6, 6-4, and 6-4.

The Firebirds lost the last three singles matches (6-1, 6-0) (6-0, 6-1) and 6-1, 6-0) to go down in a close defeat.

UDC is now 1-3 for the season and will see action again at home on Sunday, March 21, at 1 p.m., against the Kutztown University Golden Bears.
