UDC Sweeps Virginia Union, 9-0, in Tennis
Washington, DC: March 16, 2010-- The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Men's Tennis Team swept the Virginia Union University Panthers, 9-0, this afternoon at the Georgetown University McDonough Tennis Complex. The Firebirds took the doubles competition, 3-0, before going on to win the singles, 6-0, on a bright, sunshiny, but windy day.
The victory marks new Head Coach T. Richard Mahaffey, III's first win at the helm of the Firebirds. Coach Mahaffey expressed his feelings about the match stating, " It feels great to get that first win of the season. The guys have been working very hard and it paid off today. I am very proud of how they all maintained their focus on getting the job done. It was a team effort."
Especially strong performances came from sophomore Tomas Gajdusek ( Prague, Czech Republic), sophomore Demirkol Mahmut (Istanbul, Turkey) , and junior Lalindra Jayatilleke (Suva, Fiji Island), who swept all of their opponents in singles and doubles competition.
