Firebirds Gain First Tennis Win of Season

ST. MARY’S COLLEGE: MARCH 4, 2007—The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Men’s Tennis Team captured their first win of the spring 2007 season today when they downed the St. Mary’s College Seahawks 5-4 in St. Mary’s, Maryland. With the win the Firebirds are 1-1 for the season.

In singles competition sophomore Arda Kaytan (Istanbul, Turkey) defeated Jeremy Butanis 6-4, 7-5, while senior Festus Okoya (Lagos, Nigeria) defeated Jacob Eikenberg 6-0, 6-3.
Sophomore Vincente Caballero (Lima, Peru) defeated Andrew MacLaughlin 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. Senior William Kellibrew (Washington, DC) defeated Travis Horrum 6-4, 6-4, while Brett Hermans (SMC) defeated sophomore Jamaal Freeman (Washington, DC) 6-0, 6-0. Thomas Kallarackal won the final singles match by walkover, since UDC did not have a player to oppose him.

In doubles play Jeremy Butanis/Travis Horrom (SMC) defeated Arda Kaytan/Vincente Caballero 8-4; Festus Okoya/William Kellibrew (UDC) defeated Jacob Eikenberg/Andrew MacLaughlin 8-4, and Brett Herman/Ken Nugent (SMC) defeated UDC by default.
