Firebirds Battle to Draw Against Redhawks in Conference Opener

ROCHESTER, N.Y.- The University of the District of Columbia's men's soccer team battled to a scoreless draw, in conference opener against Roberts Wesleyan University, Saturday afternoon at Roberts Stadium.

The Firebird defense was rock solid, and Goalkeeper Sergio Becerra made a tied game-high five saves in their first shutout of the season. UDC's offense outshot the Redhawks 25-5 and had the edge on cornerkicks 13-5, but was unable to connect with the back of the net. Five Firebirds registered a shot on goal, Santiago Gordillo Martinez, Vasco Irazola, Eduardo Bugay, Joseluiz Avalos and Diego Meza- Baez

UDC had some early opportunities with two free picks just outside the box, seven minutes into play, but wasa unable to capitalize. They took a total of nine shots (two on goal) compared to the RedHawks three, which were all on goal. Becerra made three big saves for the Firebirds while the RedHawks goalie made two, to end the first half with a 0-0 score.

The visiting Firebirds controlled the second half of the game, dominating in shots taken (16-2) and corner kicks (11-1) but the home team was able to hold them off, forcing a 0-0 draw.

Next up, UDC (2-2-1, 0-0-1 ECC), will host Mercyhurst University in a non-conference match up on Wednesday. The game is slated to begin at 3:00 pm at the Marryland SoccerPlex Stadium.
