UDC Men's Soccer Falls to #22 Mercy

GERMANTOWN, MD- The University of the District of Columbia's men's soccer team fell to #22 Mercy, in a conference match up, Saturday afternoon at the Maryland SoccerPlex Stadium. The Firebirds fell to 5-5, 1-3 ECC on the season and the Mavericks improved to 8-2-1, 4-1 ECC.

Rookie of the Week Axel Gamez and Ivan Meza-Baez paced the Firebird offense making it onto the scoreboard with one goal apiece. Zouhir Warid and Kenec Elvir assisted on the goals. Simon Birnstad also made a season high four saves.

In what turned out to be a wild, wet and slippery game due to less than ideal weather conditions, the visiting Mavericks pulled away with the 4-2 victory. A goal off of a corner kick in the 15th minute gave Mercy the early lead which they extended to two going into the half.

Fighting to cut the deficit and bring the game back in reach, Gamez was able to sink a feed from Warid in the 57th minute to make it a one goal game. The celebration was short lived though, as Mercy quickly responded with two back to back goals to bring the score to 4-1.

The last and final goal of the game came from Meza-Baez who took a pass from Elvir and blasted it straight past the goalkeeper and up into the right corner of the net to end the game 4-2.

UDC (5-5-1, 1-3 ECC) will travel to N.Y. to compete against Queens College next Saturday. The game is slated to begin at 6:00 PM.
