GERMANTOWN, MD- The University of the District of Columbia picked up their first conference victory after defeating D'Youville University 2-1, Saturday afternoon at the Maryland SoccerPlex Stadium. The Firebirds improved to 5-4-1, 1-2 in the league, while the Saints fell to1-8, 0-4 in the conference.
The Firebirds were led offensively by Thomas Cecil and Santiago Gordillo Martinez who each had a goal, and Axel Gamez who assisted in both goals.
The home team struck first as Cecil picked up his first goal on the season in the 8th minute, to give UDC the early 1-0 lead over the visiting Saints. D'Youville was able to find the equilizer in the 56th minute putting some pressure on the Firebirds to make a move. Martinez scored the game winner in the 70th minute to secure UDC's first conference victory of the season.
The firebirds outshot the Saints 25-6 and had the advantage in corner kicks 10-1.
