Firebirds Blank Rams 3-0 in Season Opener

WEST, VIRGINIA- The University of the District of Columbia's men's soccer team opened their season with a dominating 3-0 victory over Shepherd University, Thursday evening at the SU Soccer Complex. Freshmen forwards Santiago Gordillo Martinez and Zachary Parker both scored their first collegiate goals in the first half with Graduate Midfielder Zouhir Warid sealing the deal in the second quarter with a goal of his own.

The Firebird defense held the Rams to just six shots, only two on goal, throughout the match. Two defensmen made thier way onto the scoresheet with assists, Eduardo Bugay and Giovanni Campero. Freshman Midfielder Jesse Boamah also registered his first point of his collegiate career with an assist. 

Martinez struck first for UDC, scoring an unassisted goal seven minutes into the first half. Nearly seven minutes later teammate, Parker, followed up with a goal of his own, with the assist from Bugay. The ball wouldn't see the back of the net again until five minutes into the second half after the duo of Boamah and Campero set up a play that saw Warid make his way onto the scoresheet with two points. 

The Firebird defensive efforts kept the Rams at bay and unable to connect a shot resulting in UDC's victory.

Up next, UDC (1-0, 0-0 ECC) will host Seton Hill in their first home game of the season on Sunday, August 28th at the RFK Stadium on Field one. The game is slated to begin at noon.
