Firebirds Comeback to Defeat the Knights 3-1; Earns Fifth Straight Win to Remain Undefeated in the ECC and at Home

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia's men's soccer team fought their way back from a man down to take a 3-1 victory over Queens College in a conference showdown, Saturday afternoon at the RFK Fields. Michel Egbame scored the first goal for the Firebirds to help lead them to their fifth straight win.

UDC improved to a 5-4 record overall and a 4-0 record in conference play to tie with Molloy for first in the ECC standings. The Knights fell to a 5-4 record overall and a 1-3 record in the conference.

It was a long first half for the Firebirds with Tobias Holtz scoring the first goal of the game for the Knights at the 22nd-minute mark, followed by a red card for Imrane Achahi, forcing UDC to play a man down for the rest of the half.

The second half saw a complete turnaround for the Firebirds after Egbame sent one to the back of the net seven minutes in, to tie the game 1-1 and put UDC back in the running. The playing field was then made even after Amadou Seck picked up his second yellow card (which resulted in a red) to leave both teams with only 10 players on the field. Vitor Gomes went on to score the second and third goals for the Firebirds, to cement their victory over the Knights 3-1.

This win for UDC broke a seven-year losing spell against Queens, as the last time the Firebirds defeated the Knights was back in 2014. Junior and freshman midfielders Pierre La Noire and Jonathan Vargas both registered an assist in an epic comeback battle to keep UDC undefeated at home.

Next up the Firebirds will travel to N.Y. on Saturday, October 9th, to face off against Mercy College in another conference showdown.
