Clutch OT Goal by Gomes Leads Firebirds to 1-0 Victory over Wildcats

WASHINGTON, DC- The University of the District of Columbia's men's soccer team defeated Daemen College in an Overtime victory on Saturday afternoon at the RFK Fields. UDC improved to a 3-4 overall record and a 2-0 record in ECC play.

Coming into Saturday's game, both teams were 1-0 on the conference. Tensions were high as both teams fought to remain undefeated. UDC played most of the game on offense putting a lot of tension on the Daemen defense. The Firebirds outshot the Wildcats 18-4 but couldn't seem to connect any into the back of the net. A scoreless first and second half which ended in a red card for Joseluiz Avalos in the 87th minute left the Firebirds a man down going into overtime.

Despite the disadvantage of having one less player on the field, the Firebirds fought to keep the Wildcats at bay. Up until the 98th minute, both teams remained scoreless, but a great pass from Eduardo Bugay from across the field to Vitor Gomes ended in a clutch goal for the Firebirds to take the victory.

UDC (3-4, 2-0 ECC) will head to Staten Island on Wednesday, September 29th to continue conference play against the CSI Dolphins. The game is slated to begin at 3:30 pm.
