Firebirds Soar Past Conference Foe STAC to Claim 4-1 Victory

Sparkhill N.Y.- The University of the District of Columbia's men's soccer team defeated ECC foe, St Thomas Aquinas College 4-1 to claim their first conference victory of the season. Vitor Gomes led the Firebirds offensively picking up two goals and an assist and goalkeeper Javier Abadia Torres registered a season-high seven saves.

UDC's first goal came from Ignacio Pericet (his third goal of the season), with the assist coming from freshman teammate Imrane Achahi. Gomes scored the next two goals for the Firebirds (one of which was assisted by Zouhir Warid) and assisted Joseluiz Avalos in their final goal to win the game.

Fresh off their first season win over Slippery Rock on Wednesday, UDC went into their first conference game of the season with confidence. They led the Spartans the entire game with Torres only conceding one goal in the first half and completely shutting them out with four saves in the second half.

Both UDC and STAC registered a total of 13 shots with the Spartans having the upper hand in corner kicks 10-3. STAC's lone goal game from Juan Pablo Varea and teammate Jose Tovar picked up a red card in the 75th minute, forcing them to play a man down for the last 15 minutes of regulation.

This was UDC's first win over STAC since their 2017 season.

UDC (2-4, 1-0) will host their next conference game against Daemen College, next Saturday, September 25th at the RFK stadium. The kick-off time starts at 2:00 pm.
