Gomes Nets Two Goals; Firebirds Man Down Proved Lethal

Erie, PA- The University of the District of Columbia's men's soccer team fell 4-2, in a tough loss against Mercyhurst University, on Friday afternoon. Vitor Gomes netted a season-high two goals to lead the Firebirds offensively.

A little less than seven minutes into the first half, Goalkeeper Jason Sorto was issued a red card, forcing the Firebirds to play a man down for the rest of the game. The Lakers were able to take advantage of their man-up situation and scored their first goal just ten minutes later. UDC would then respond with a goal from Gomes, assist from Zouhir Warid, to tie the game 1-1 going into halftime.

Despite being man-down, the Firebirds were able to take the lead 2-1, early in the second half after Gomes netted his second goal of the day. But as the game continued, despite their efforts UDC couldn't keep up with the demands of playing a man down. Mercyhurst went on to score three more goals to cement their victory over the Firebirds.

UCD (0-3, 0-0) will take a day to regroup and face off against the #12 ranked Gannon on Sunday, September 12. The game is slated to start at 1:00 pm.
