Gabriel Torres Earns East Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week Honor

CENTRAL ISLIP, NY – The University of the District of Columbia's Gabriel Torres was named East Coast Conference Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week for his performance in the week ending Sunday, October 23rd.

Torres, a freshman midfielder from Salvador, Brazil, registered a hat trick in the Firebirds' 3-0 non-conference win on the road at East Stroudsburg on Saturday. He fired a team-high eight shots during the week as UDC split games vs. Queens College (2-0 loss) and ESU.

Torres, the 2nd Firebird this season after freshman Benhur Gebretsanie to earn an ECC Rookie of the Week honor, is currently 9th in the ECC in goals (7), 7th in points (17) and 7th in shots (53) this season, and 2nd in all three categories among ECC rookies.

Torres and the Firebirds need at least a win and a tie in their final two games of the season against ECC foes LIU Post and Roberts Wesleyan in order to qualify for a top-four spot in the standings and an ECC Tournament berth. They first visit LIU Post, ranked No. 2 in the NSCAA national poll, on Wednesday, October 26th.
