Firebirds Severely Outplay Salem Internation; Don’t Get Result

BOYDS, MD – The University of the District of Columbia men's soccer team out-shot its guest Salem International College, 19-6 and doubled the Tigers up in corner kicks, 4-2, but came away losers in a 1-0 decision on a steamy hot Saturday afternoon at Maryland Sports Complex.

The Firebirds had a few good scoring opportunities, particularly in the first half when junior midfielder Liam Haycock nearly finished a beautiful set-piece but his shot sailed high in the wind, just over the net. UDC put five shots on goal – all of which came in the first half.

Salem International (1-2) managed a paltry two shots on goal the entire game, scoring only on a direct kick from 30 yards out by Emilio Marti. The Firebirds defensive line of Victor Salinas-Furio, Nelson Moreno and Christian Juarez shut down the Tigers attack all game long.

Both teams struggled to find an offensive flow as the game was dominated by whistles blown by the official. Thirty-eight fouls in total were called, including 25 on Salem International. The referee also handed out six yellow cards and two red cards.

The Firebirds (0-4) return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Wilmington, DE to take on regional foe Goldey-Beacom College.
