Firebirds Comeback Falls Short in 4-2 Loss at Molloy

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY – The University of the District of Columbia men's soccer team could not dig itself all the way out of a 3-0 hole in the first half as the Firebirds fell on the road at East Coast Conference foe Molloy, 4-2 on Wednesday afternoon.

After falling behind by three goals 32 minutes into the game, sophomore transfer forward Maurice Schwab scored his team-leading 5th goal of the season on a strike from 25 yards out to put the Firebirds on the board right before halftime. Schwab later helped UDC pull within a goal 20 minutes into the 2nd half when he sent a cross into the box that was headed in by senior forward Moussa Traore for his 3rd goal of the season.

Twelve minutes later, however, Lucas Munoz tallied his 3rd goal of the game (7th of the season) when he collected a rebound off of a shot that hit the post by Mosiah Whyte. Munoz had a foot in all four Lion goals as he also scored Molloy's first two goals in the 11th and 31st minutes and assisted on Kyle Poetzsch's goal in the 32nd minute. Whyte was credited with assists on all three Munoz goals.

UDC (5-9-1, 3-5 ECC) out-shot Molloy 21-15 and had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Louis Connor stopped four of eight shots he faced in a losing effort. Molloy's Stephen Tappeto helped the Lions win their 5th straight game as he made eight saves while allowing only two goals. Molloy improved to 10-3 overall and 5-2 in league play with the victory.

With two ECC contests remaining, the Firebirds are still not mathematically out of a top-four spot and an ECC Championship Tournament berth. They visit Dowling (3-3) on Saturday, October 24th at 12 p.m.
