Firebirds Secure Second Straight Shutout Victory at Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, NY – The University of the District of Columbia men's soccer team earned its second consecutive shutout victory with a 2-0 win over Mercy in East Coast Conference play Saturday afternoon.

Sophomores Felix Angerer (Business Management – Bayreuth, Germany/Graj Minster Gymnasium Bayreuth) and Nenad Smiljanic (Health Education – Barnsley, England/Barnsley College) each scored for the Firebirds, who tied last season's total of seven wins and are now 7-4-1 overall (3-2 East Coast Conference). Junior goalkeeper Louis Connor (Elementary Education – Birmingham, England/Arthur Terry School), the ECC's saves leader, tied his season-high of eight saves for his second consecutive shutout victory.

Angerer scored his 7th goal of the season nearly 18 minutes into the game off of assists by sophomores Patrick Borchert (Business Management – Hagen, Germany/Fern Universitat Hagen) and Sam Rowden (Psychology – Lincoln, England/Saint Peter Saint Paul Catholic Secondary School). Angerer currently ranks 4th in the ECC in goals scored and 3rd in points scored with 17.

In the second half, Smiljanic scored his 5th goal of the season in the 67th minute of regulation to give UDC a 2-0 cushion. He has registered five points (2 goals and one assist) in the Firebirds' two victories this week.

Mercy out-shot UDC 6-3 in the second half, including a 5-1 margin in shots on goal; however, the Firebirds' one shot on net was Smiljanic's goal, and Connor saved all five shots he faced.

Next up, the Firebirds will visit ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas in Sparkill, NY on Wednesday, October 15th at 3:30 p.m.
