Firebirds Suffer 2-1 Setback vs. Bridgeport

ARLINGTON, VA – The University of the District of Columbia men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to East Coast Conference foe Bridgeport on a windy fall Saturday afternoon at Long Bridge Park.

The Firebirds (5-4-1, 2-2 ECC) evened the score at 1-1 when sophomore forward Felix Angerer (Business Management – Bayreuth, Germany/Graj Minster Gymnasium Bayreuth) scored his team-leading 6th goal of the season off of a beautiful feed by junior midfielder Elio Hernandez (Elementary Education – Germantown, MD/Northwest HS) in the 67th minute of regulation. However, Luka Ivanovic scored the game-winner with 6:30 remaining in regulation for the Purple Knights (4-4, 3-2 ECC).

UDC out-shot Bridgeport 21-13 for the afternoon, including a 12-7 advantage in the second half. The Firebirds had a great offensive chance in the first half at the 32-minute mark when sophomore forward Sam Rowden's (Psychology – Lincoln, England/Saint Peter Saint Paul Catholic) run from midfield ended with a pass inside the box to Angerer, who dribbled around goalkeeper Agustin Prados but missed wide right by about a foot. Kieran Simms scored for Bridgeport in the 30th minute to give the Purple Knights a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Junior goalkeeper Louis Connor (Elementary Education – Birmingham, England/Arthur Terry School) made four saves and allowed two goals in the loss. Bridgeport's Prados made seven saves and allowed just one goal in the win.

The Firebids will host non-conference foe Chestnut Hill on Wednesday, October 8th at 4 p.m.
