Firebirds Stout Defensively in 2-1 Win at Roberts Wesleyan; Improve to 2-0 in ECC

ROCHESTER, NY – After allowing four goals in a loss to Mercyhurst on Thursday, the Firebirds stiffened defensively for a 2-1 East Coast Conference win on a long road trip to Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.

The Firebirds' (5-2-1, 2-0 ECC) defensive line allowed the Redhawks just four shots on goal, of which, junior goalkeeper Louis Connor (Elementary Education – Birmingham, England/Arthur Terry School) made three saves and let up just one goal.

Meanwhile, sophomore forward Felix Angerer (Business Management – Bayreuth, Germany/Graj Minster Gymnasium Bayreuth) and junior forward Moussa Traore (Journalism – Silver Spring, MD/John F. Kennedy HS) each tallied goals for UDC, who out-shot RWC 12-10 and took seven corner kicks to the Redhawks' four.

Angerer's team-leading 5th goal of the season came in the 37th minute of regulation off of an assist by sophomore forward Sam Rowden (Psychology – Lincoln, England/Saint Peter Saint Paul Catholic Secondary School). Angerer fired a shot from the left side, about 15 yards out, and beat Roberts' goalkeeper and  Michael Scavone to the back post to give UDC a 1-0 need heading into halftime.

Traore added the insurance goal in the 69th minute, as he blasted a shot from the left side as well, about 18 yards out, and beat Scavone to the lower left post. The goal was Traore's third of the season and gave UDC a 2-0 advantage with a little over 20 minutes left in regulation.

With a little under 10 minutes remaining on the game clock, Ben Porpilia headed in a cross from Kehinde Aderonmu for the Redhawks' first goal of the afternoon. Roberts' only chance at scoring the equalizer came on a shot by Michael Mcginnis in the 89th minute, but Connor made the save to preserve the win.

The Firebirds will look to improve to 3-0 in league play on Wednesday, October 1st as they visit the two-time reigning ECC champs, LIU Post. The Pioneers, the pre-season favorite to capture a third straight title, are 4-3-1 overall and coming off of a 1-1 tie this afternoon at NYIT. Last year, UDC erased a two-goal deficit to force a 2-2 tie vs. LIU Post on the Firebirds' Senior Day, October 30th.
