UDC Plays to Scoreless Tie at Mercy in Double-Overtime Defensive Struggle

DOBBS FERRY, NY – Sophomore goalkeeper Louis Connor stopped eight Maverick shots to help the University of the District of Columbia men's soccer team force a scoreless tie on the road vs. Mercy in East Coast Conference action Tuesday afternoon.

The Firebirds have now tied their last two games, bringing their overall record to 7-5-2 and their ECC mark to 2-4-2. Mercy, who is in a tight race with Bridgeport and Queens for the 4th and final ECC playoff spot, fell to 9-3-4 overall and 3-2-3 in the ECC.

Mercy held a 25-15 shot advantage and 11-4 edge in corner kicks; still, the Mavericks only had eight shots on goal compared to the Firebirds' six. Danny Leon, Jr. very nearly had the game's only goal for Mercy in the 30th minute of regulation, but his shot clanged off of the crossbar.

UDC took just one shot in the first half but fired 11 in the second half. Nick Papas, Mercy's goalkeeper ranked 21st in the nation for save percentage coming into the game, stopping all six of the Firebirds' shots on goal. Freshmen Felix Angerer (Business Administration – Bayreuth, Germany/Graj Minster Gymnasium Bayreuth) and Adam Spinks (Health Education – Birmingham, England/Fairfax HS) were the most active offensive players for UDC with five and three shots, respectively.

The Firebirds will host their last home game of the season tomorrow at 3 p.m. vs. the No. 15 nationally ranked LIU Post Pioneers. Before the game, the team's four seniors – Roque Hernandez, Carlos Reyes, Jose Garcia and Bakary Coulibaly - will be honored in a Senior Day ceremony.
