Firebirds Fall Short, 4-3 at Queens

FLUSHING, NY – The University of the District of Columbia men's soccer team, playing its second game in as many days, ran out of gas in a bitter, 4-3 defeat at East Coast Conference foe, Queens, on Thursday afternoon.

Eerily  similar to last year's meeting when the Firebirds had a 3-1 lead in the second half but wound up settling for a 3-3 double-overtime tie, UDC scored three consecutive goals to take a 3-2 lead early in the second half only to surrender two unanswered goals for their third one-goal loss of the season.

The loss drops District of Columbia to 7-5 overall and 2-4 in league play while Queens improved to 9-3-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the ECC.

Paul Sandoval scored the game's first goal a little over six minutes in followed by a penalty kick goal by Scott Lamont in the 17th minute as the Knights stormed out to an early 2-0 lead. Before intermission though, senior Bakary Coulibaly (Electrical Engineering – Bamako, Mali/La Lumiere HS) tallied his team-leading 7th goal of the season to put the Firebirds on the board and give his team some much needed momentum.

With that momentum, the Firebirds struck twice in the opening two minutes of the second half to capture a 3-2 advantage. First, freshman reserve forward Adam Spinks (Health Education – Birmingham, England/Fairfax HS) scored his second goal of the year off of an assist by classmate Sam Rowden (Psychology – Lincoln, England/Saint Peter Saint Paul Catholic Secondary School), quickly followed by freshman Felix Angerer's (Business Administration – Bayreuth, Germany/Graj Minster Gymnasium Bayreuth) unassisted sixth goal of the year.

The 3-2 lead did not last long though as Tyler Iocco tied the score minutes later. Queens, which out-shot UDC 15-4 and took seven corner kicks to the Firebirds' zero, took the lead for good in the 67th minute when Glen Reid scored an unassisted goal.

The Firebirds will visit Buffalo, NY for their first ever meeting with ECC newcomer, Daemen College on Saturday, October 26th. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
