Firebirds Men’s Soccer Team Engages Less Fortunate Children in Soccer Activities

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia men's soccer team attended a community service project staged by Kids Enjoy Exercise Now (KEEN) at St. Colletta School in Southeast DC on Saturday, February 2nd.

After undertaking a purposeful orientation, players were asked to provide individual and small group attention to those less fortunate who may have had behavioral difficulties varying from autism to inability to focus.

The players were given small background details on their respective child in the hope of engaging them in varying exercises or free play at the child's discretion.  With extensive patience, a caring attitude and a willingness to help, the players showed a superb attitude to the program as the children responded to the enthusiasm and energy given.

"It was truly a spectacular session," program manager Beth Wenger said. "[The players] brought an energy and enthusiasm to the session that captured the kids' attention and kept them 'on the ball.' Every child was active and engaged with soccer – as much as he or she was able – and that was fantastic to see."

All the Firebird men soccer players also found the experience extremely worthwhile, according to assistant coach Daniel Wadeson.

"Our guys are eagerly looking forward to returning on April 6th to St Colletta to renew friendships with the KEEN family," Wadeson said.
