District of Columbia Men’s Soccer Suffers First Loss at Holy Family

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The University of the District of Columbia out-shot non-conference foe Holy Family 14-8, but the host Tigers handed the Firebirds their first loss of the season, 2-1 on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon at Tiger Field.

District of Columbia, ranked No. 7 in the East Region heading into action this week, fell to 3-1-1 on the season while Holy Family, of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, improved to 3-1.

Senior TV production major Tansu Korkmaz (Istanbul, Turkey – Ozel Dogan Lisesi) scored District of Columbia's lone goal on a penalty kick to even the score at one-apiece in the 37th minute of play.  The two teams headed to halftime deadlocked at 1-1; however, the Tigers' Jeffrey Wimsey headed in a pass from Alah Mbriwa in the 59th minute for what proved to be the game-winner.

Less than 30 seconds prior to Wimsey's game-winner, the Firebirds had a quality opportunity to have taken their own lead. Freshman psychology major Moussa Traore (Silver Spring, MD – John F. Kennedy HS) fired a shot that was deflected off the hands of HFU goalkeeper Kelly Diaz (five saves, one goal allowed), and sophomore education major Ben Diaz (Silver Spring, MD – Northwood HS) was there for the rebound, but shot wide of the net.

District of Columbia out-shot HFU 4-3 in the remaining 31 minutes of play after Wimsey's goal and took four corner kicks to the Tigers' one (9-2 for the game) in that span, but the Firebirds could not score the equalizer as they fell, 2-1.
