District of Columbia Men’s Soccer Completes a Successful 2011 Campaign But Falls to St. Thomas Aquinas in Finale

Sparkhill, NY - The District of Columbia Men's Soccer Team dropped a road game to future East Coast Conference foe St. Thomas Aquinas, but they close out the season 8-5-4, a vast improvement from the 2010 season.  With the win St. Thomas Aquinas advances to 10-2-4 on the year.

The Firebirds were outshot 21-9 on the day, 10-5 in the first half.  At the conclusion of the first half the Spartans held the edge 1-0.  St. Thomas Aquinas got on the scoreboard in the 28th minute of the first half on a goal from Sean Reily.  The Spartans then delivered the finishing blow in the second half as Joseph Connelly scored two goals only three minutes apart in the 62nd minute and the 65th minute.  St. Thomas Aquinas played an exceptional defensive game, holding the Firebirds to only 9 shots and no goals on the day.

Despite the loss, District of Columbia Head Coach Matt Thompson was upbeat saying, "We would have liked to have won our last game of the year, but there is no question that we put some major bricks in place.    I am proud of our team for the effort they put forth all year, and hopefully this is just the beginning."
