University of the District of Columbia Men’s Soccer Ties Seton Hill University 0-0 After Two Overtimes

Washington, DC – The University of the District of Columbia Men's Soccer Team ended the home slate today with a 0-0 tie against Seton Hill University.  The Firebirds outshot the Griffins 20-5, but despite the offensive imbalance, the score remained knotted up after two overtimes.  The Firebirds sit at 8-4-4 with one road game remaining, while the Griffins remain at 5-10-2.

In his second start of the season, freshman goaltender Alex Vert (Rockville, MD - Urbana HS) held Seton Hill scoreless through 110 minutes of play, but much of the credit lies with the Firebird defensive unit who did not give up a shot in the first half.  Senior center back Nana Bamfo (Upper Marlboro, MD/Ghana - Largo HS) and freshman center back Tom Ryan (Rugby, England - Bilton School) anchored the defensive effort.  The Firebirds had several scoring opportunities, putting seven shots on the goal, but Seton Hill goaltender Scott Matthews turned the Firebirds away.  In the overtime periods junior midfielder Adriel Garcia (Sau Paulo, Brazil - Anglo Campinas) pressed hard for the goal on two occasions, but could not convert.

District of Columbia Head Coach Matt Thompson had this to say about today's game, "We had some chances, but we didn't capitalize.  We wanted to win this one, our last home game, but we just couldn't find the back of the net unfortunately.  We have one more to go on Thursday, but I think we are making strides."

The future looks bright for District of Columbia Soccer as they only graduate one senior, Nana Bamfo, from this year's team.  The Firebirds return to action at 3:15 PM on Thursday in Sparkhill, NY against St. Thomas Aquinas.
