UDC Men’s Soccer plays #8 California University (PA) to 1-1 tie in Two OT’s

Washington,DC – Firebird men's soccer played an all out physical and emotional game vs. the eight ranked Division II program in the country this afternoon, battling to a 1-1 tie in 2OT's at the UDC Soccer Field.

After ascending to its highest national ranking in recent program history in the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America (NSCAA) Top 25 poll, California (PA) played an aggressive game and the Firebirds matched their intensity all day long. The Vulcans had 21 fouls and 4 yellow cards for the contest; the Firebird's finished with fewer fouls but had 5 yellow cards.

UDC freshman, Bakary Coulibaly (Hyattsville, MD (Mali)-La Lumiere HS) took an assist from sophomore Jose Garcia (Sterling, VA- Park View HS) at the 16:34 mark of the first period, and struck a left-footed rocket into the goal.  The second period would see the pace continue to escalate, and the Vulcans got the equalizer on an unassisted goal from freshman Brad Colvin at the 19:15 mark.

The overtime periods produced no goals but the exceptional effort from both teams continued.  Coulibaly had two decent chances in the 2nd OT, but both went wide. The Vulcans had 23 shots for the game and sophomore goalie, Kyle Heatherington (Collingwood, Ontario-Collingwood College Institute) had 13 saves.

UDC men's soccer is now 6-3-2 for the year and #8 California University (PA) is 9-1-3. The Firebirds next travel to play cross-town rival Washington Adventist on Thursday, October 13th at 7pm.
