UDC Falls to Gannon 4-2 in Soccer

Erie, PA: September 2, 2009-The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Soccer Team was on fire as they took a 1-0 lead over the Gannon University Golden Knights in the first ten minutes of their match in Erie, Pennsylvania, today. However, it would not be enough for the win as Gannon came roaring back with four goals to hand UDC a 4-2 defeat.

Sophomore mid-fielder Alejandro Velasoc (Sterling, VA) struck first for the Firebirds, getting an assist from sophomore Mid-Fielder Said Nabih (Alexandria, VA) and getting past the Gannon defense to beat their goal keeper with a kick to the right side into the net in the 7th minute.  Gannon’s forward Dan Howell struck back, scoring on a cross from Evan Chate to tie the score at 1.

Forward Affirm Latifi  scored the next goal for the Golden Knights in the 16th minute with an assist from Evan Chate. UDC’s senior mid-fielder Kendel Penny (Gasparillo, Trinidad) scored their next goal on a free kick after a penalty against Gannon in the 47th minute, to tie the score at 2-2.
The Golden Knights scored the next two goals when Lafiti  sent the ball into the net in the 63rd minute, unassisted. Mohammed Bangura collected Gannon’s final goal in the 81st minute with an assist from Adam Sharbaugh.

UDC is now 1-1-1 for the season. They return to action on Saturday, September  5, against the East Stroudsburg University Warriors in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.
