District of Columbia Hands Shippensburg 3-2 Loss at Home

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Oct. 12, 2005: Despite holding a 2-1 lead at halftime, the Shippensburg University men's soccer team could not hold off the University of the District of Columbia which scored two unassisted goals in the second half to edge out a 3-2 victory at David See Field on Wednesday.

Even though the non-conference loss was the Red Raiders' eighth in their last 10 games, Shippensburg's two goals were the most scored by the team since a 2-0 victory over Bloomsburg University at home on September 24, a span of six games.

The Red Raiders (5-10) fell behind early when Jonathan Orlando beat junior goalkeeper Marc Petrucci (Avondale, Pa./Avon Grove) who was making his first start of the 2005 season. The goal came off an assist from Pidenam Bodjona just five minutes into the contest.

In the 22nd minute, Shippensburg junior Damon Kegerise (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) delivered a pass to sophomore Tyler Stanley (Kalispell, Mont./Columbia Falls) who tied the game at 1-1 when drove the ball past the outstretched arms of Firebird goalkeeper Yankulov Boyan.

The Red Raiders increased their lead to 2-1 when freshman Trey Davis (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Nile C. Kinnick) assisted fellow freshman Aaron LaSalle (Hamilton, Mont./Hamilton) for his first career goal.

However, UDC tied the game in the 48th minute on a goal from Alvin Quarza before Diego LaHoya scored in the 65th minute. The Firebirds fired a pair of shots at Petrucci who went to the ground to save the first shot, but LaHoya then lofted the rebound into the back of the net for the game-winner.

Petrucci made eight saves in the loss, including six in the second half. Meanwhile, Boyan recorded five saves for UDC.

UDC's season record is now 5-8-0. Their next match will be October 22, against Dominican College in Orangeburg, New York.
