HOLY FAMILY NIPS UDC IN OVERTIME
WASHINGTON, DC- OCTOBER 10,
2005: Holy Family University defeated the University of
the District of Columbia (3-2) today in a hard fought contest in
Washington. The “Tigers” of Holy Family took an early
lead when Jim Latronica (So.) sweeper put the ball into goal
unassisted in the 26th minute of the match.
Holy Family extended the lead when Latronica took a pass from Matt
Kocher (So.) sweeper, and put it into the back of the net in the
31st minute to increase the score to 2-0. The first half for UDC
consisted of missed pass opportunities and frustration as they fell
behind.
The second half of the match was a whole new ball game as the
“Firebirds” capitalized on the opportunity to notch
their first goal of the match on a penalty kick by Jonathan Orlando
(Fr.) forward, 58 minutes into the match. UDC scored their second
goal in the 71st minute when Alvin Quarza (Jr.) midfielder,
unassisted, struck from the left side of the goal to even the match
at 2-2.
Regulation match time ended with the scored tied at 2-2, and sent
the match into sudden death overtime. After many exchanges back and
forth from one end of the field to the other, the
“Tigers” were able to break the backs of the
“Firebirds” when Mike Matalavge took the ball in a lot
of traffic and kicked it over the goal line into the net.
UDC’s season record is now 4-8-0. Their next match will be
against Shippensburg University on October 12, in Shippensburg,
Pennsylvania.
