HOLY FAMILY NIPS UDC IN OVERTIME

WASHINGTON, DC- OCTOBER 10, 2005: Holy Family University defeated the University of the District of Columbia (3-2) today in a hard fought contest in Washington. The “Tigers” of Holy Family took an early lead when Jim Latronica (So.) sweeper put the ball into goal unassisted in the 26th minute of the match.

Holy Family extended the lead when Latronica took a pass from Matt Kocher (So.) sweeper, and put it into the back of the net in the 31st minute to increase the score to 2-0. The first half for UDC consisted of missed pass opportunities and frustration as they fell behind.

The second half of the match was a whole new ball game as the “Firebirds” capitalized on the opportunity to notch their first goal of the match on a penalty kick by Jonathan Orlando (Fr.) forward, 58 minutes into the match. UDC scored their second goal in the 71st minute when Alvin Quarza (Jr.) midfielder, unassisted, struck from the left side of the goal to even the match at 2-2.

Regulation match time ended with the scored tied at 2-2, and sent the match into sudden death overtime. After many exchanges back and forth from one end of the field to the other, the “Tigers” were able to break the backs of the “Firebirds” when Mike Matalavge took the ball in a lot of traffic and kicked it over the goal line into the net.

UDC’s season record is now 4-8-0. Their next match will be against Shippensburg University on October 12, in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania.
