Firebirds Steal Overtime Victory Against Barton College

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The University of the District of Columbia Men's Lacrosse team snatched an overtime winner in an entertaining 17-16 win against Barton College, on Tuesday afternoon at the UDC Field.

The Firebirds (1-1, 0-1 ECC), were caught early by the visiting Bulldogs with three back-to-back goals giving the visitors an early lead. An opener by Freshman, Kyle Drouin was the start of a gruelling match-up for UDC as the first quarter ended 5-1.

The second quarter saw the UDC Firebirds respond with passion and flair as they struck five goals to reduce the deficit by three goals. Freshman, Joseph Cote notched up four goals in style with Jeffrey Vo providing a goal and assist in the second.

With the score tight and not much between the two teams, the visitors continued to answer UDC's efforts of a comeback with the third quarter ending 12-10.

However, the fourth quarter erupted with both teams playing valiantly in what could have been either team's first win of the season. Barton took the game to the Firebirds producing two early goals by Jake Copio.

A goal by Zander Torres was the kick start UDC needed in their last ditch attempt to earn a win. The British Columbian native led the Firebirds in the fourth quarter adding another two goals and one assist to end the quarter 16-16 and send the game into overtime.

The UDC Firebirds and the visitors started the overtime period shakily, but a breakthrough did arrive when Torres burst through the defensive line and executed a marvelous individual finish to give UDC the victory.

UDC will be looking to add to their victory today with a visit to Chestnut Hill, Saturday February 15th.
