Firebirds Soar Past St. Thomas Aquinas, 13-7 for Season’s First Victory

SPARKILL, NY – The University of the District of Columbia men's lacrosse team earned its first victory of the season on Saturday afternoon with a sound, 13-7 non-conference road victory over St. Thomas Aquinas College.

The Firebirds (1-2) scored the game's first four goals and never looked back, padding their lead to as much as a nine-goal advantage (12-3) in the third quarter before settling for a six-goal win. The Spartans fell to 0-5 overall in their inaugural season with today's loss.

Junior attack Chase Fraser led all scorers with four goals on a game-high 13 shots and seven shots on goal. Freshman midfielder Cameron Green added a pair of goals and an assist, and seven other Firebirds tallied a goal apiece.

UDC outshot St. Thomas Aquinas 37-18, won 16-of-22 face-offs, and was 11-of-12 on clear attempts. Graduate goalkeeper Pat Payne stopped four of 11 shots he faced in his first victory of the season.

The Spartans were led by attack Thomas Hollway's three goals and one assist, and midfielder Kevin Alvora added two goals.

Four different Firebirds scored in the first 11 minutes of action to give UDC a 4-0 lead, and UDC would take a 4-1 advantage into the 2nd quarter. St. Thomas Aquinas added another goal just 16 seconds into the 2nd quarter to make it 4-2, but that was as close as the Spartans would get all day. UDC scored the final three goals of the half and led 7-2 at intermission.

UDC went on to score the first three goals of the 3rd quarter and out-score the hosts 5-1 in the third period to extend its lead to 12-3.

STAC out-scored UDC 4-1 in the 4th quarter, but it was too little too late as the Firebirds won by a 13-7 final score.

The Firebirds will visit Alderson-Broaddus on Wednesday, March 16th at 4 p.m.
