Men’s Lacrosse Suffers 19-10 Loss in Season-Opener to Post University

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia men's lacrosse team was defeated, 19-10 by Post University in the Firebirds' 2016 season opener at Woodrow Wilson HS.

Junior attack Chase Fraser and freshman midfielder Braylon Lumb led the Firebirds with three goals apiece, and senior midfielder Darien McPhail Millard added two goals in the loss. Graduate goalkeeper Pat Payne made eight saves on 27 shots faced, and sophomore midfielder Teilen Celentano was 16-of-27 on face-off attempts with a game-high 10 ground balls.

Post (1-0), which improved to 2-1 vs. the Firebirds in the all-time series, was led by attack Trevor Buchas' game-high seven goals on seven shots. Fellow attack Matthew Mazza added four goals, and Luke McDermott and Paul Hylan each added two goals. Eagles goalkeeper Rob Rohan stopped 21 of the 31 shots he faced in a complete game victory.

The Firebirds out-shot Post 64-44 and put four more shots on goal, they had four fewer turnovers (21-17), they won six more face-offs (19-13), and they won the ground ball battle 49-37. However, with Rohan's 13 more saves than Payne, and half the number of penalties (12-6), the Eagles were able to win comfortably by a nine-goal margin.

Buchas had a hat trick in the first quarter as he scored the first two goals of the game and the Eagles' last of the quarter to help Post to a 4-1 first quarter lead. Lumb scored off an assist from freshman attack Edmund Taylor nearly three minutes into the 2nd quarter to make it, 4-2, but that was as close as UDC would get the rest of the day. Buchas started and finished a 5-0 Post surge with unassisted goals, extending the Eagles' lead to 9-2. McPhail-Millard scored the final goal of the half with 43 seconds remaining to make it 9-3 at intermission.

UDC was even with Post at four goals each in the 3rd quarter as Millard and Fraser each scored and Lumb added two more goals. But the Firebirds still trailed 13-7 heading into the 4th quarter.

Post went on to out-score UDC 6-3 in the 4th quarter and went on to win, 19-10.

Next up for the Firebirds is another home contest vs. ECC foe Dominican NY on Friday, March 4th at 7:30 p.m.
