Turnovers Plague Firebirds in 16-7 Loss vs. No. 12 Mercy

ARLINGTON, VA – Facing their 3rd straight top-15 nationally-ranked opponent in No. 12 Mercy College on Wednesday afternoon, the University of the District of Columbia men's lacrosse team suffered a 16-7 defeat in East Coast Conference play at Long Bridge Park.

The Firebirds (1-4, 0-3 ECC) won an astounding 24-of-26 faceoffs - 19 of which, were won by freshman Teilen Celentano (Accounting – Ottawa, ON/E.S.P. Louis-Riel); however, they turned the ball over 27 times and were just 10-of-17 on clear attempts. Celentano scored a season-high three goals as did sophomore attack Chase Fraser (Elementary Education – Aldergorve, BC/Blue Ridge HS).

Celentano's 19-of-21 (.905) faceoff performance today is the 8th best mark this season in Division II and the highest in the ECC. The team's 24 faceoff wins ties for 13th best performance this season with four other schools.

UDC junior goalkeeper Pat Payne (Environmental Science – Catonsville, MD/CCBC Catonsville) made 15 saves in a complete game effort.

Mercy (7-1, 2-0 ECC), which won its 5th straight game, had 10 players tally at least one goal, including a game-high four goals by preseason All-American attacker Jesse Wood. The Mavericks avenged last year's 8-7 loss in Dobbs Ferry, NY where Wood was held scoreless and Fraser went off for five goals.

Shots favored Mercy 50-30 as the Mavericks had 17 fewer turnovers (10) and successfully converted 23-of-24 clear attempts. UDC was the considerably more penalized team as Mercy had 11 extra-man opportunities and converted five, while the Firebirds had just three attempts but converted all of them.

Fraser and sophomore midfielder Quinton Pavan (Childhood Education – Port Coquitlam, BC/Blue Ridge HS) each scored for UDC during the first quarter to keep the Firebirds close at 4-2 when the first horn sounded, but the second quarter saw the visiting Mavericks out-score UDC 7-0 to take a commanding 11-2 halftime lead.

Celentano scored all three of his goals in the second half and Fraser added another, but Mercy coasted to an 11-goal margin of victory.

Next up, the Firebirds will visit non-conference foe Post University in Waterbury, CT on Sunday, March 29th at 1 p.m.
