UDC Men's Basketball Back in Win Column after Defeating Molloy in Conference Play

WASHINGTON, DC- the University of the District of Columbia's men's basketball team edged Molloy University 73-72 en route to their first conference win of the season. The Firebirds improved to 3-4, 1-1 in conference play, while the Lions fell to 1-7, 0-2 in the league.

All twelve Firebirds made their way onto the scoreboard, with Tevin Curtis leading the way with 16 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals. Vernon Simmons came off the bench to score 13 points and Hartnel Haye posted 11 points, six rebounds and four assists. 

The Firebirds got out to an early start leading by as much as 16 points in the first half. The Lions slowly chipped away at the lead, bringing it down to just four heading into the break. 

Coming off the break, Molloy took the lead and extended it to eight with 9:37 to go. A 6-0 run by the Firebirds saw them up 71-65 with 46 seconds remaining but the game was far from over as the visitors knocked down a trey to make it a three point game.

Haye earned two points at the charity stripe, with 26 seconds remaining and the Lions responded with another 3 pointer but the Firebirds were able to hold them off for the final buzzer. 

UDC shot at 37.7% from the field and Molloy shot at 39%. The Firebirds had the edge in rebounds 42-40, had more points in the paint (26-20) and bench points (28-14).

Up next, UDC (3-4, 1-1 ECC) welcomes St Thomas Aquinas College in another conference double-header next Wednesday. The men's game is slated to begin at 7:30 pm.
