Firebirds Drop Conference Opener to Knights

FLUSHING N.Y.- the University of the District of Columbia's men's basketball team fell to Queens College 62-56, Wednesday night at the Fitzgerald Gymnasium. The Firebirds fall to 2-4 on the season and 0-1 in conference play, while the Knights improve to 4-2, 1-0 in the league.

Three Firebirds recorded double-figure scoring, with Eric Morgan Jr leading the way with 12. Hartnel Haye had 11 points and eight rebounds and Vernon Simmons came off the bench to add 10 points, two steals and two blocks. Micah Campbell also pulled a team high 11 rebounds. 

Both teams went into the half-time break tied at 34. Coming off the break the Firebirds were able to open up a nine point lead over 12 minutes, but the knights were able to rally back going on a 19-5 run in the last eight minutes to win the match up.

UDC shot at 36.5% from the field compared to Queens 33.8%. The Knights forced 18 Firebird trurnovers compared to their 13, but both teams converted 17 points off of turnovers.

Up next, UDC (2-4, 0-1 ECC) will continue conference play at home, hosting Molloy University on Saturday at 3:00pm.
