Firebirds Suffer Close Heartbreaker to Frostburg State 64-63

WASHINGTON, DC. – The University of the District of Columbia's men's basketball team was edged out at the last second by Frostburg State to fall 64-63, at home Wednesday night. The Firebirds fell to 2-9 on the season and the Bobcats improved to 5-7.

Jahmir Marable-Williams led the Firebirds flirting with a triple-double registering team-highs of 14 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists. Freshman guard Tevin Curtis also contributed 11 points and teammate reserve Phillip Brown Jr added 10 points.

UDC took the early lead getting on the scoreboard first after Curtis knocked down a three. But the Bobcats would go on a scoring run creating a nine-point lead over the Firebirds. Three jumpers by Hartnel Haye, a pair of free throws by Kenyon Stone, and Brown Jr made it a two-point game with 1:38 remaining in the first half. A jump shot right before the buzzer by Marable-Williams gave UDC the one-point lead going into halftime.

The second half started with a layup by David Buriss and UDC went on to have their biggest lead of the game by seven points. The Bobcats fought their way back to take the lead 55-53, with 4:48 remaining in regulation.

The most exciting and action-filled moments happened within the last minute and three seconds. Brown Jr made a layup to tie the game 61-61. With 11 seconds to go Marable-Williams drew a foul, going on to make both to give UDC a two-point lead. Frostburg took a timeout to advance the ball with hopes of either tying and forcing an OT or winning the entire thing with a three. With less than a second to go Torrin Stephens pulled up for the three but was fouled resulting in three free throws. After making two to tie the game, UDC called a timeout in hopes of disrupting his momentum, but Stephens came back to knock down the last free throw to give the Bobcats the narrow win over the Firebirds 64-63

UDC (2-9, 1-1 ECC) will continue playing at Home facing off against conference foe D'Youville College for the first time ever in a doubleheader on Friday. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm.
