UDC Men’s Basketball Suffers Lopsided Loss at Molloy

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY – The University of the District of Columbia men's basketball team suffered a 76-57 loss to East Coast Conference foe Molloy College at Quealy Gymnasium Wednesday night.

The Firebirds (2-16, 1-9 ECC), coming off their first ECC win of the season on Saturday vs. NYIT where they scored a season-high 107 points, shot just 39-percent (24-of-62) from the field and a paltry 19-percent (3-of-16) from three-point range tonight.

UDC and Molloy battled to eight different lead changes in the first nine minutes of action, with UDC last leading by a score of 22-21 around the mid-way point of the first half. The Lions stampeded their way through the final 11 minutes of the opening period, however, outscoring UDC, 27-8 and taking a commanding, 46-30 halftime lead.

Already in front, 51-34 about three-and-a-half minutes into the closing half, Molloy put together an 18-4 run over a span of nearly eight minutes, which culminated in Molloy's Nick Corbett's three-pointer to put the Lions ahead, 69-38. The Firebirds out-scored their hosts 19-7 over the final eight-and-a-half minutes, but it was too little too late.

Freshman forward Maurice Waters led UDC with 12 points, and he also had a game-high three blocked shots. Senior guard Khalil Jackson contributed 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals, and junior transfer guard Danny Shand pitched in with team-highs of six rebounds, six assists and three steals to go with eight points.

Molloy featured three scorers in double-figures, including a game-high 24 points by the 5th leading scorer in the conference, Nick Corbett, who shot 8-of-12 from the field, 6-of-9 from long range and 2-for-2 at the foul line while also handing out six assists. Meanwhile, forward Curtis Jenkins was one rebound shy of a double-double with 15 points, nine boards and three assists. Also, Justin Caldwell came off the bench to add 12 points and five rebounds.

Next up, UDC will host ECC foe Queens College on Saturday, January 27th at 3 p.m.
