UDC’s Joseph Nickerson Earns East Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week

CENTRAL ISLIP, NY – The University of the District of Columbia's Joseph Nickerson was named East Coast Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for his performance in the week ending January 15th.

 

Nickerson averaged 27.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 3.0 assists per-game in a 2-0 week for the Firebirds. He shot 52.6 percent from the field (20-for-38) and 90 percent (9-for-10) from the foul line in steering the Firebirds to back-to-back league wins.

 

First, in a 90-79 UDC win over Molloy that saw the Firebirds overcome a 48-38 halftime deficit, Nickerson registered 28 points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists. Then, Nickerson packed the stat sheet once more in an 84-80 win at Mercy, compiling 26 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals.

 

Nickerson, a senior guard out of Newark, NJ, is currently No. 1 in all of NCAA Division II for steals per-game with 3.20. Meanwhile, the Firebirds as a team are 13th in the nation for free-throw percentage (78.1), 18th in steals per-game (9.3), 28th in turnover margin (3.6) and 33rd in blocked shots per-game (4.4).

 

The Firebirds (10-6, 7-1 ECC) have won their last four straight games and seven of their last eight, as they currently stand in 1st place in the ECC standings.

 

UDC has two road tests coming up this week – first, at the University of Bridgeport on Wednesday, January 18th and then at Daemen College on Saturday, January 21st.
