UDC Men’s Basketball Falls, 83-60 at Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, PA – The University of the District of Columbia men's basketball team was defeated by host Slippery Rock University, 83-60 in non-regional action Wednesday afternoon at Morrow Field House.

The Firebirds fell to 1-3 with today's loss while The Rock, a member of the Atlantic Region and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, evened its overall record at 3-3.

UDC was led by senior guards Joseph Nickerson (16 points) and Kasim Chandler (15 points), and junior guard Anthony Matthews' season-high 10 points.

SRU, which out-shot UDC 61-percent to 37-percent from the field and out-rebounded the Firebirds, 43-21, featured three scorers in double-figures, including Naquil Jones' game-high 19 points, Merdic Green's 18 points, and Amir Maddred's 14 points.

The Rock never trailed in this game as they raced out to a 14-5 lead over the first nine minutes of action and never looked back. The hosts would out-shoot UDC 75-percent to 29-percent and out-rebound the Firebirds, 19-8 in the first half as they took a commanding, 39-20 lead at intermission.

Slippery Rock still led by 15 early in the 2nd half when it put the game out of reach courtesy of an 18-2 run to take its largest lead of the day, 59-28. The Rock then coasted to a 23-point margin of victory.

The Firebirds will host their season home opener on Wednesday, November 30th vs. Virginia Union University at 6 p.m.
