UDC Suffers Defeat at Bridgeport in Season Finale

BRIDGEPORT, CT – The University of the District of Columbia men's basketball team suffered a 95-63 loss at East Coast Conference foe Bridgeport on Saturday afternoon in the Firebirds' 2013-14 season finale.

The Firebirds were led by junior transfer forward Lenjo Kilo (Biology – Silver Spring, MD/Seton Hill), who registered a game-high 23 points along with five rebounds and two assists. Sophomore sharpshooter Omar Abbas (Electrical Engineering – Alexandria, Egypyt/Egyptian American HS) also added 18 points and seven rebounds.

The Purple Knights (16-10, 14-6 ECC), who secured the No. 2 seed in next week's ECC Tournament with today's win, led wire-to-wire thanks in large part to four double-figure scorers, including a double-double effort by Sean Berry (16 points, 12 rebounds).

Bridgeport scored the game's first six points and raced out to a commanding 19-6 lead after a layup by Curtis Loving. The Purple Knights led by as many as 14 in the first half and took a 44-31 lead at intermission.

The Purple Knights would then outscore UDC 11-5 in the first three minutes of the second half to open up a 19-point lead, 55-36. Still a 16-point Bridgeport lead at the 13:29 mark, the Purple Knights took complete control of the game with a 14-0 run over the next four minutes to go up, 75-45. UDC never got any closer than 25 points the rest of the way, as Bridgeport coasted to a 95-63 win.

The Firebirds, who had three marquee seniors out with injury and had to play with only seven available student-athletes for the majority of the season, finished the season with an overall mark of 3-23 and a league mark of 1-19. Kilo proved to be a bright spot in an otherwise tough season for the Firebirds, as he finished 3rd in the ECC in scoring (19.0 ppg) and 2nd in rebounding (9.5 rpg). Also freshman guard Reggie Sidbury ranks 2nd in the ECC in three-point FG pct. at 41.5-percent.
